Actividades

Days when the weather does not allow out-door activities and you still need your daily exercize one alternative could be to visit a gym. The one closest to Costalita is named Buddha Gym, located on the upper (northern) side of the main road, in Cancelada on the parallell road, direction west. For those of you enjoying a game of Bridge there are several possibilities. Depending on what you are looking for there are different options to pick from. If you are already pair you just have to go to the place of the game while if you don't have a partner it is preferred to announce this in advance. Most clubs can help players without a partner to find one.

Less experienced (Nordic) players are recommended a visit to AHN, the Spanish-Nordic Association up in Nueva Andalucia. There you can play on thursdays at 3.45 pm during the winter months and the play is more focussed on socializing than competition bridge strictly following all the rules of the game. After a couple of rounds there is a coffee break whereupon the game continues. The language spoken here is Swedish.

For those of you looking for more of a competition type of bridge a visit to the Nueva Alcántara Bridge Club can be recommended. At this club, situated just below the Banahavís exit of the main road, you can play every day of the week at 4.30 pm. The players are of many different nationalities and the official language is English. The club also organizes a Bridge School for different levels of players Tuesday-Friday at 11 am. Tuesdays are dedicated to beginners, Wednesdays to "almost" beginners and Thursdays to the little more advanced. Fridays there is possibility to practice bridge play in a little simpler way for those that don't feel ready to start playing real competitive bridge.

People interested in Bowling can play at Megabowl (tel 902 232 999), a gigantic Bowling alley in La Cañada, the Shopping Area on the mountain side of the main road (A7) above Marbella. They are open Sunday through Thursday from noon until 2 am and Fridays, Saturdays and holidays until 3 am in the morning. If you get hungry before 10 pm, there are a number of restaurants serving fast food such as sandwiches or hamburgers (Mac Donalds). After 10 pm most places are closed. Free parking.

Bena Vista Tennis/Lawn Bowling and Country Club
Bena Vista Tennis/Lawn Bowling and Country Club

An English sport with traditions is Lawn Bowling, which can be practized in the Bena Vista area, across the main road a few hundred yards in direction Marbella. The complex is named Bena Vista Tennis/Lawn Bowling and Country Club and, as can be deducted from the name there are also possibilities of playing tennis or having a cup of coffee, tea or a bear here. A study visit is recommended.

VP Raquet Club Villa Padierna (tel 952 887 301), closest neighbor west of Costalita, facing the hotel, offers an area dedicated as a children's Play Ground with climbing platforms, slides etc. Maybe something children could dedicate their time to while their parents play tennis? The installation is open from 10 am until 10 pm during the winter and from 8 am until midnight during summer (See also section about tennis further down on this page).

Actividades para toda la Familia

Tennis can be played at several clubs in the vicinity of Costalita. Most of them are membership clubs but often it is possible to use also these clubs against a fee. The simplest (and cheapest) way of playing is up in Cancelada on the public tennis court which is, during the winter, open daily from 3 pm until 11 pm. During the "red" days (Weekends) and also on Wednesdays they open already at 10 am. You pay per hour and equipment can be rented on site. Next to the court there is a swimming pool and a bar where coffee is served. You reach this installation by taking the lefthand pedestrian bridge over to Cancelada and then the second street (next street to the west after the "restaurant" street) up towards the mountains, the same street where you find the local Street market every friday.

Up alongside the main road there is an Equestrian installation where horses can be rented for rides along the beach. I have however no further details as I (so far) haven't used this possibility.

Upper lifts Ski Instructors

Skiing enthusiast can satisfy their needs in Sierra Nevada, Costa del Sol's own Alps, which is found a couple of kilometres beyond the city of Granada, but at a higher altitude which is why one has to allow for a good half hour’s drive from Granada. Sierra Nevada's main population center is Pradollano located at a heigth of 2100 metres. It is quite a small town with several hotels and pensions. From the main square you can take the lift up to the mountains where the ski runs start and where there are also bars, restaurants, ski schools, shops for equipment rental etc. The total number of runs is 39 runs of varying degree of difficulty providing an overall total length of 61 kilometres. In order to maintain as long a season as possible, several permanent snow guns are installed. There are two (smaller) cabin lifts, "gondolas", which allow one to travel up the mountain also without skis. Sierra Nevada also functions of course during the summer, when you can walk in or climb the mountains.

Welcome to Tarifa

Kite surfers in Tarifa

Windsurfing lovers will have their wishes fulfilled in Tarifa, known as the windiest place in Europe with hundreds of windpower mills along the shoreline. Follow the motorway westwards (or the coast road, free of charge) towards Cádiz. After passing Algeciras the road shrinks into a narrow road climbing up the mountain side. At the summit there is a small café offering splendid views over Gibraltar and Africa. Carry on for another 15 km after Tarifa and turn left at the sign ”Bolonia”. The road leads down to the beach and to one of the most intact Roman ruin cities in Europe. There are also a few OK restaurants down there. This part of the coast is called Costa Ballena and is very exposed to the Atlantic.

Dolphin Safari (tel 956 680 741) is organised with departure either from Algeciras or Tarifa. We find Tarifa the best alternative, reasons being on one hand that Tarifa is a smaller town, easier to localize yourself in, on the other because boats with departure from Tarifa make tours in towards the Gibraltar Strait as well as outwards into the Atlantic why the probability of seing more delphin species increases. There are two daily tours from Tarifa, they last for roughly two hours and costs 30 Euros per person.
