Shopping

Before going into the details of shopping it should be noted that shops normally are closed on public holidays and in Spain there are quite a lot of these held at dates that we are not used to in Northern Europe. In addition to national public holidays you find holidays local to Andalucia, Malaga or even Estepona for that matter and if a public holiday happens to be on a Sunday which is already a holiday also Monday is made a holiday as compensation. So don't get trapped and left without food. Now there is however an emergency escape to be found also for people that need to shop on public holidays, named OpenCor, open 365 days a year (For more details see below).

Food

Close to Costalita
Let's start with the most important, where to buy food close to Costalita....

The Gas station

Supercor

Just Basic Things
The Gas station situated within walking distance from Costalita on the main (coast) road sells basic grocery items such as milk, butter, bread, newspapers and is open 24 hours a day. Among other things they have freshly baked bread which can be very tasty when purhased fresh in the morning.

La Tienda

Lisa's Shop
La Tienda
.
La Tienda, "The Shop", is the simple name of the closest shop which is found in the El Saladillo area, right to the east of Costalita, on the same side of the Main road. It is a small grocery shop situated on one of the streets going down to the beach and carrying the proud name of Avenida Jabega. The simplest way to get there is to follow the Beach Walk eastwards and then turn left one block after it ends. The shop is open daily 9.30 am - 3.00 pm and 5.30 pm - 9.30 pm.

Lisa's Shop (tel 606 027 955), another small local grocery shop, is located to the west of us, in the Villacana area, on the righthand side of the road heading down towards the beach and the restaurants 90 Miles and Enrique's (Calle Bolivia). The easiest way to get there is taking the bridge in Costalita's northwestern corner and then follow the street straight on. The shop is open daily 9.00 am - 2.00 pm. Fridays closed.

Large quantity (food) shopping
On the opposite side of the main road, there are three large Supermarkets: Mercadona, Supeco and Lidl. They are easily reached by walking, but it can be challenging to walk back home carrying large quantities of food. You walk there either across the same bridge as the one used by the cars or by use of the pedestrian bridge, a bit further east (towards Marbella). By car the simplest way to get get there is to cross the main road and then turn right at the first roundabout. If you don't go by car and don't want to carry the food back home there are two possibilities, to take a cab or to use the home delivery service of the supermarket. The selection at those Supermercados corresponds to what we might find in a larger Sainsbury shop. Furthermore they have good quality fish, meat and delicacy counters with fresh produce.

The new Lidl in Cancelada..
The Cancelada Lidl..
..offers fresh bread - every day
..offers fresh bread - every day
Lidl is today our closest supermarket and it was in Spain that we found out about Lidl for the first time, far before they got established back home. In order to get to Lidl you cross the carretera and turn right in the first roundabout. You can't miss it. They offer food at very affordable prices, however their selection is limited. One of the good things about Lidl is their offering of good and priceworthy wines and beers. One of the specialities of this particular Lidl is that they offer freshly baked bread - everyday.
Also Estepona has their Lidl, a shop where we have been frequent customers for many years before we got our own right acrosss the road. Best access to the Estepona Lidl is by taking the second Estepona exit from the ringroad. From there you drive in direction of the sea until you come to the first big roundabout from where you see Lidl up on your right. One difference from our neighbouring Lidl is that the Estepona one has got manual meat and fish counters.
Advantages of Lidl is easy access and large parking areas. If possible try to avoid the Estepona Lidl on Wednesday mornings when one of the two weekly Estepona markets takes place on the surrounding streets and access may be a bit complicated. Open Monday-Saturday 09.00 am - 10.00 pm.

Mercadona

Mercadona, the second closest Supermercado is, in our opinion, also the one with the best layout and management. In addition, the shop is today completely fresh since they demolished their old building at the end of 2021 in order to open in larger, completely newly built premises right in time for Easter 2022. They have a slightly limited product selection though, very much focused on the Spanish market, not much of "international" products. Those who have visited a Mercadona elsewhere in Spain will recognize the layout as the product selection and the display structure is very much the same in all their shops. Their manual fish counter offers a range of fresh, quality fish. Mercadona merchandize can also be ordered over the Internet (Please click on the link above). Home delivery is offered at a small fee (7,21€), delivery the following day. Opening hours are Monday - Saturday from 9.00 am to 9.30 pm. During summer months also open on Sundays.

The manual meat counter is really inviting
Supeco is an old but new familiar shop now that Carrefour acquired old Supersol and included it as part of their new low-cost chain Supeco. After a complete renovation the result has become a really fresh and welcoming shop. Among things to mention there is a well assorted manual meat and charcuterie counter. In the shop you will find products of Carrefour's own line and suppliers. Supeco is open Monday - Saturday 9 am - 10 pm, during the summer months also open on Sundays.

Supercor
Supercor Exprés
.
.

Supercor Exprés, a chain of food stores managed by El Corte Inglés, keeps open all days of the year. Their concept is the same as known from e g the Seven Eleven group back home although Supercor Exprés offers a far wider product range, almost in class with "ordinary" Super Markets. Supercor Exprés shops are found a little bit here, a little bit there if you keep your eyes open, e g right in front of El Corte Inglés and in the Estepona port area (First parallell road to the main road, next to Estepona's Tax Authorities). The closest Supercor Exprés is located below the Urbanisación El Pilar on the main road towards San Pedro, Km 168. Drive eastwards to the Benahavís crossing, turn around, drive back in the Estepona direction, pass the Diana Center and you are there. Open all days of the week 7 am - 1 am.

Aldi
Aldi
Aldi
.
We must not forget to mention Aldi, the other big German food shopping chain next to Lidl. In the Estepona area there are three Aldi shops where the one closest to Costalita is located on the righthand side of the carretera, roughly six kilometres drive in the Estepona direction. Open 9 am - 7.30 pm all days except for Sundays. During the peak season (read summer) they are open also on sundays.

If you don't mind going a bit further you can visit Carrefour at the entrance of Estepona from the Costalita direction. This is a very large supermarket which carries hardware and furniture in addition to a very wide range of foods and drinks. You can reach and return from Carrefour by bus. They are open Monday-Saturday from 9 am until 10 pm, during summer months also open on Sundays.

Department Stores
There are a number of department stores along the coast, most of them situated a bit away, in Fuengirola and the outskirts of Málaga.

The department store closest to Costalita is also the largest and most renowned one, namely Corte Inglés, "Costa Marbella" (click for more info) situated on the coast side of the main road just before Puerto Banús. You can't miss seeing this large complex as you drive by. You can find almost everything there such as clothing, household electronics, home furnishing details etc. Its ground floor comprises a large food department, named Hipercor, which could be compared a little to eg. the food department at Harrods. The food is a bit more exclusive but at slightly higher prices. This is perhaps the place to find your New Year's Eve Lobster. Their offering of quality wines is probably the best one you will find along the coast. It has its own Parking Garage with direct access to the shopping premises. Open Monday - Saturday 10 am - 10 pm (Hipercor opens one hour earlier, at 9 am). The official opening times for the parking garage is also 10 am - 10 pm, but they will let you in from 9 am if you tell them you are going to Hipercor.

Malls
There are also a number of malls along the coast, most of them in the vicinity of Malaga airport or to the north of La Línea/Gibraltar.
The mall closest to Costalita is La Cañada, (click for more info) a large shopping center situated on the mountain side of the motorway above Marbella, exit Ojén. There you find a Galeria with some 50 shops and on top of that a large store for do-it-yourself builders (Leroy Merlin), a large shop for home electronics and whiteware (Worten) and a car tyre workshop (Norauto). In the Galeria there are shops for eg. clothing (H&M, Zara and similar), decoration, furniture, radio, TV and records etc. Inside the galeria you also find the food store Al Campo. This store is even larger than local supermarkets and has a larger assortment of everything. We go there when we are longing for really good beef as stocks meat imported from Argentine. They also offer deep frozen prawns of the type you are used to from home, together with a large selection of wine and spirits. Free home delivery is offered provided your purchase exceeds 90 Euros. Should you get hungry there are a number of restaurants serving fast food such as sandwiches or hamburgers (McDonalds). Their opening times are from 9 am to 10 pm, Monday through Saturday, which also applies to most other shops at La Cañada. Free parking.

Specialized shops
Sometimes you look for shops that are specialized in certain products. Below you will find some of these.

.
The British Butcher's
.
Liam's Quality Meats
Here comes an address for those of you knowing to appreciate really good meat. The spaniards usually prefer heifer (ternera) or veal (ternera blanca) and mostly it is very difficult to find really tender and really deep red beef (buey) or mutton (cordero). Those looking for that should pay a visit to the The British Butcher's (tel 952 885 745), located on the upper side of the main road, a few minutes walk in direction San Pedro in the Benavista area. Take the second pedestrian bridge on the righthand side from Costalita (First bridge leads to Supeco). Open weekdays 8.30 am - 5.00 pm and Saturdays 8.30 am - 3.00 pm.

In Benavista there is also a second excellent butcher, namely Liam's Quality Meats (tel 693 651 403) managed by Irish Liam Bell. His shop is found on the second parallell street from the carretera, Calle Sabinillas (on the backside of Golfriends golf shop). Liam's shop is open Tuesday - Saturday 10 am - 3 pm.

Casa Jamón in Marbella
.
The ham is manually cut here...
.
..and they have plenty of it
For those of you looking for the very best Spanish ham there is a perfect place in Marbella, which is La Casa del Jamón (click for more info). Their address is Calle el Fuerte 4, the next parallel street behind the Alameda park.

Swedish Food

Spisa
Spisa
Casa Nórdica
Casa Nórdica
Except for what is mentioned above there are a number of shops on the coast specializing in Swedish food. These, however, are not quite easy to find and if you are short of time you must really have a strong homesickness to justify the trouble of going there. Besides of the information given below, more information can be found on Facebook where the shops are also represented.

Miadel (tel 952 819 196), being the closest one out of the shops selling Swedish food, is found on the road up to Nueva Andalucia that starts just before the Casino, behind the Lorcrimar Hotel. Besides selling food, Miadel also sells Swedish books. Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 7 pm, Saturday 10 am - 2 pm.

Scandi Supermarket
Scandi Supermarket in Estepona
Scandi Supermarket (tel 952 815 298) (click for more info), is found a bit further up, in the La Campana area, right below the Torre de Andalucia. This shop, previously an ordinary supermercado, a "hole in the wall", where Manolo welcomed his customers for many years, was in September 2012 when Manolo retired, taken over by Swedish owners, got a facelift, and also a new name. Scandi has also installed a manually managed delicacy counter where a variety of goodies, as eg. homemade shrimp salad or homemade Swedish meatballs (offering varies from one day to another depending on what the "chef" has prepared) is on the list. Besides Swedish products also common Spanish groceries can be found. Scandi also offers food for catering. Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 7 pm, Saturday 10 am - 4 pm, Sundays closed.

In July 2023 Scandi expanded with yet another shop, now located centrally down in Estepona, at Calle Melilla 35 (tel 627 56 87 13). Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 5 pm, Saturday 10 am - 2 pm, Sundays closed.

Spisa (tel 679 776 080), the latest addition to the Swedish shops and maybe the one with the largest product range is located at Centro Plaza (next to the Bull ring) in Nueva Andalucia. A fresh shop with a fine offering. Open monday-sunday 9 am - 9 pm.
Aldi
ScandiCandy
Aldi
.

ScandiCandy (tel 679 776 080) is a pure "candy" shop offering "Swedish" bulk confectionery to those longing for some Saturday sweets. If it tastes good, it costs money though. Price level is roughly twice what we pay in Sweden. They have two shops. One below the San Pedro Boulevard and the second one is one of the new shops opened at the Nueva Andalucia Bull ring. Maybe a good idea to pass by while visiting the Saturday street market close by.

Casa Nórdica (tel 952 199 914) is maybe the shop with the largest offering of Swedish products on the coast. It is found some 50 metres from the Feria in Fuengirola on one of those small streets leading out from the square where market stands are erected once or twice a week. Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 7 pm, Saturday-Sunday 10 am - 3 pm.

Besides Casa Nórdica there are a number of smaller shops in Fuengirola where Swedish/Scandinavian food can be found. Some of these are:

New Ewald's (tel 952 666 239) is maybe the largest of those "smaller" shops. This shop is found a little bit east of the Market Place, on the lefthand side of the main street, in the Boliches area. Their offering has a little bit of Finnish touch. Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 7 pm, Saturdays 10 am - 4 pm, Sundays closed.

Centro Idea
.
Delicatessen..

..has a large offering
.
Vikingos Minimarket
Delicatessen (tel 952 581 236) is found in Centro Idea, a shopping center in a white building on the lefthand side, a bit up on the Mijas road (before passing over the motorway AP-7). Their product offering has a slight Danish touch. Open Monday-Friday 10 am - 3 pm, Saturdays 10 am - 2 pm, Sundays closed.

Vikingos Minimarket, tel 951 063 295, is neighbour to the new Aldi (next street to the left) on the lefthand side right at the beginning of the Mijas Road. Their product offering has a slight Danish touch. Open Monday-Saturday 9 am - 7 pm, Sundays 10 am - 2 pm.

Pharmacies

There are two pharmacies in Cancelada on the opposite side of the main road. The closest pharmacy with more generous opening times is located in San Pedro.

Farmacia Internacional in San Pedro
Farmacia Bel Air (tel 952 883 448), our closest pharmacy, is found next to Mercadona. They are open all days of the week 08.30 am - 10.00 pm.

Farmacia (tel 952 887 754) is what we could name the other pharmacy as we have no better name for it. It is located in the center of Cancelada, just in front of the pedestrian street entrance. Open Monday - Friday 10 am - 8 pm, Saturdays 10 am - 1.30 pm. Sundays closed.

La Farmacia Internacional (tel 952 780 708), our closest 24-hour pharmacy, is found in San Pedro on the "main street", Avenida Marquez del Duero, ie. the street heading up towards he church square, on the left-hand side. Open all days of the week.

Banks

Banks is something that there are plenty of in Spain. In Cancelada, across the main road from Costalita, there are two of them and in San Pedro you will find another ten. Most banks provide ATM machines where withdrawal of money is mostly free of charge if you use the ATM belonging to a bank where you have an account, while a fee is added when you use machines belonging to other banks. The ATM's can often be used also for other services than withdrawal, such as eg. payment of bills or loading money onto your cashless mobile phone card. Payment of bills is not often so easy to do in a bank. They can refuse you to do that if you are not a customer of that bank and often payment of bills is limited to certain days and certain hours.

.
Unicaja
.
Sabadell
Unicaja (tel 901 246 346) is found on the lefthand side of the main street leading into Cancelada. From the pedestrian bridge on the left from Costalita you walk straight on. This bank is closed for the moment.

Sabadell (tel 952 880 353), located next to the roundabout facing Mercadona, is probably the bank where you will most certainly be served in English or even other languages, as eg. German, for that matter. Sabadell also has one of their ATM's installed at Carrefour in Estepona. Open Monday - Friday 8 am - 3 pm.
