Markets

Visiting a street market is an experience that you shouldn't miss when visiting the Costa del Sol (unless you are a normal middle-aged man, Emmet's comment). Each town or village with a modicum of self respect or size, has it's own street market and these are spread so that each town or village holds its market on a different day of the week. Most of the market salesmen are to be seen at the market of one village one day and the market of another village the next day and so on. Though at first sight most markets seem very much to resemble each other, some differences may be distinguished. Most commonly a lot of knick knacks are for sale but there is also a good chance of making a real bargain. Clothing can be found at most markets and there are good possibilities of finding cheap children's clothing or copies of well-known brands at reasonable prices. Leatherware and china with interesting designs can also be found at attractive prices. One must not forget to bargain of course.

The markets can be divided into so-called Street Markets, which is the type described above, and Flea Markets, mainly selling all kinds of used goods, from harvesting machines to old china and old photo albums (including photos). Most of the markets are of the street market type, while the flea markets, also indicated below, are less fewer in number.

Markets are normally open between 8 am and 2 pm (The best time to visit is between 10 am and noon).

The following Street Markets are the ones closest to Costalita:

Tuesday Fuengirola opens the largest of its three weekly markets on Tuesdays. This market, you will find at the "Recinto Ferial" in the eastern part of central Fuengirola.

Wednesday Estepona (Calle Carmén Laforet). NB! New address since 2017! This market is accessed by taking the second Estepona exit from the ringroad and then drive down towards the sea. From the first roundabout Lidl can be spotted up to the right, take that road. Drive across Lidl to the next roundabout, take the street to the right, and there the market is found a few metres in. A good idea is to park your car at Lidl's parking premises when visiting the Wednesday market (At least during the high season). Estepona Harbour Street Market Sabanillas

Sunday Estepona's Sunday market is held in the harbour. Clothing, jewellery, china and so on are on display for sale here. The Sunday market is smaller than the Wednesday one and relatively open in its design as it is sited directly adjacent to the sea and in the port. A good number of restaurants are to be found alongside the market inviting one to relax after the shopping trip and enjoy a good Sunday lunch.

Sabanillas market, located around ten kilometres west of Estepona, right above the main coast road, is one of the best organised markets and presents a bigger number of antiques than any other market along the coast. Visually it looks like a huge Flea Market. A visit to this market can be combined with a visit to the old Roman Bath situated next to the natural sulphur well a little further up along the street (Please also refer to Excursions).

On Sundays street markets are also held in Ronda, Nerja, Torremolinos, and Fuengirola harbour.
